About Voltgeber

What Voltgeber is, who it is written for, how the site is funded and who is responsible for what you read.

Updated

Voltgeber is an independent guide to plug-in solar and home energy. It answers the questions that come up before you buy a kit and after you plug it in: whether it is legal where you live, what you have to register, what a kit costs, what it saves and how much power you can expect. Every answer names its sources and the date it was last checked.

Who we write for

The English edition serves two groups: people in the United States, where plug-in solar is being legalized state by state, and English speakers living in Germany who have to deal with German rules and German forms. You need no technical background. We explain terms where they first appear and say clearly when a rule applies to one state or country and not to another.

What we are not

Voltgeber sells nothing. There is no shop, there are no affiliate links and no paid product placements. When we name a manufacturer or a product, it is an example of a feature, not a recommendation to buy.

The site is funded by advertising. Ads are labeled as such and delivered by an ad network. Advertisers have no say in which topics we cover, what we write or how we rate anything. Our editorial policy explains how we handle advertising.

How the guides are made

Each guide starts from primary sources: state bills and utility rules in the US, laws, regulator guidance and grid operator requirements in Germany. A draft is written from those sources, then checked against them sentence by sentence in a separate pass before it is released. When a rule changes, we update the affected guides; the “Updated” and “Last verified” dates are shown on every guide. The full process is described on the methodology page.

Who is behind it

Guides are published under the byline Voltgeber Editorial Team. The person responsible for the content is named in the legal notice. Voltgeber is not owned by or affiliated with any manufacturer, retailer, utility or industry association.

Other editions

Voltgeber also publishes in German, French, Spanish and Italian. Each edition covers its own market with its own rules and sources; none is a translation of another.
